Why the west should not see the conflict in Sudan as two generals fighting over power
Wadah Hashim
The fight in Sudan between the Armed Forces headed by general Burhan and The Rapid Support Forces leaded by general Daglo can be truly analyzed if we look at history of both forces, SAF was was founded in 1925 as Sudan Defense Force before independence and re-established in 1956 after independence while RSF was established in 2013 by Elbasheer regime as a light force for Darfur operations and border control.
Since it’s establishment RSF affiliation was changed from one institute to another from National Intelegence Service to Armed Forces to directly under Elbasheer (presidency). The reason of this change of affiliation is the type of operations the RSF perform to reach its goals; as it is known that RSF use bloody methods such as relocation of African tribes in Darfur and burnt grounds tactics they used to wipe out whole villages in Darfur. Another reason for the reason of negative look for RSF is that it recruits Foreign personnel from countries such as Chad and Niger which many see as National threat. In Summary the RSF was established to perform the dirty tasks by any means.
After the revolution that toppled the Basheer regime in 2019, Daglo was put in the Transition Sovereignty Council of Sudan to ensure his support to the ongoing change in Sudan, his position in the TSC was his chance to increase his forces and power as it gave him political power, regional relations and economic strength giving him hands on Sudan gold industry; which lead to the increase of his forces from 25,000 fighter to 150,000.
General Daglo’s ambition didn’t stop at the increase of wealth and forces but started to seek the rulie of whole Sudan through coalition with some of the political figures by toppling general Burhan to make RSF the main Sudan Army to protect the ruling of those figures. The main obstacle for this plan is that the RSF doesn’t have Airforce and that’s why the RSF first step was to occupy Merowe airport which contains on of the largest Airbase in Sudan to stop any air attacks on RSF and this was the first flame of the current war.
The west should understand that SAF and RSF should not be seen as equal counterparts, as the SAF is the National armed forces of Sudan while RSF is a Wagner like militia owned by one person looking forward to become a new dictator in Africa.
